Our Story

Welcome to Stitch Street

Hi, I’m Jen - the crochet designer, teacher and technical editor behind Stitch Street®.

I live in Cambridgeshire with my husband and two children. After nearly twenty years teaching languages, I left the classroom at Easter 2025 to work on Stitch Street full time.

My working days look rather different now, but helping people learn, understand and grow in confidence is still at the heart of what I do.

My grandmother first taught me to crochet, and I rediscovered it when I was expecting my first child. During lockdown in 2020, it became a much-needed moment of calm after days spent juggling family life, home-schooling and online teaching.

That was when I started Stitch Street.

What began with selling handmade pieces gradually grew into something broader. I could see how making offered opportunities to practise patience, work through setbacks and experience the satisfaction of saying, “I made that.”

As a teacher and a parent, I recognised how easily the fear of getting something wrong can stop us from trying. Crochet gave me a practical way to explore a different approach: a mistake could be something to investigate, undo and learn from.

That idea still shapes my work today.

Where it began

Designing has become a much-loved part of Stitch Street. My patterns have appeared in Inside Crochet and Crochet Now, and I also publish designs independently.

Inspiration often comes from places I’ve visited, something I’ve noticed outdoors or a stitch I want to explore. Some designs grow through collaborations with independent yarn businesses, sharing ideas and finding ways to bring their yarns to life in crochet.

Behind each finished piece are swatches, calculations, changes of direction and plenty of learning. I enjoy that process, but seeing someone else make the design their own is particularly special.

My aim is to create patterns that are clear and encouraging to follow, with room for you to choose colours and make something that feels like yours.

From an idea to a crochet pattern

I’m a Knitting For All Accredited Teacher, and I bring my experience in education to every crochet session I teach.

My work includes classes and workshops in yarn shops and other venues, individual tuition, and sessions for businesses and organisations. I also teach in workplace and wellbeing settings, giving people an opportunity to step away from their usual tasks, try something creative and spend time learning together.

Whether we’re working on your first stitches or exploring a new technique, I’ll help you understand what you’re doing and why. There’s room to ask questions, slow things down and try again.

I love those moments when “I can’t do this” becomes “Oh, I see!” Confidence often grows through small discoveries like that.

Teaching crochet - and building confidence

Alongside designing and teaching, I’m a certified crochet technical editor.

I work with designers to check the details behind their patterns, including stitch counts, measurements, repeats and the clarity of the instructions. It’s careful, thoughtful work that draws on both my crochet knowledge and my experience of explaining things to learners.

I aim to help each designer produce an accurate, consistent pattern while keeping their own style and voice. I’m always thinking about the maker at the other end: will they have the information they need to follow this confidently?

Supporting other designers

Stitch Street is still just me. I design the patterns, teach the sessions, carry out the technical edits and reply to your messages.

Across all those parts of my work, the same values matter: curiosity, kindness and the space to learn. I believe we can take our making seriously while being gentle with ourselves along the way.

Whether you’re choosing your next project, learning to crochet, organising a workshop or looking for support with a pattern you’ve written, I’d love to hear from you.

Let’s see what we can make possible - one stitch at a time.
