Social media use linked to lower happiness levels in young people

Finding Calm Beyond the Scroll

You may have seen recently that studies are continuing to link social media use with lower levels of happiness - particularly among young people.

And honestly… I don’t think that’s surprising.

We’re living in a world where so much of our time is spent online - scrolling, comparing, consuming. It’s constant, and often passive. We take in so much, yet are left with the strange feeling that we haven’t actually done anything at all.

There’s a restlessness that can come with that.

A sense of distraction.
A lack of focus.
A quiet feeling of dissatisfaction we can’t always name.

The Need for Something Different

This is where I think we need to gently ask a different question.

Not just how do we reduce screen time?
But what do we replace it with?

Because removing something isn’t always enough.
We need something that gives back.

Something that grounds us.

Something that engages us.

Something that allows us to feel present again.

Why Crochet Matters

This is where crochet becomes so powerful.

It offers something that social media simply can’t:

  • 🧶 Focus

  • 🧶 Calm

  • 🧶 A sense of progress

  • 🧶 Something real in our hands

When you crochet, your attention shifts.

Your hands are busy, your mind begins to settle, and your thoughts have space to slow down. There’s a rhythm to it - one stitch at a time - that gently brings you back into the present moment.

And perhaps most importantly, there’s a sense of doing.

Of creating something tangible, something you can see growing in front of you. In a world of endless digital consumption, that feeling is incredibly grounding.

What I See in My Classes

I see this transformation happen every week in my crochet classes and in my 1:1 sessions.

People often arrive feeling distracted, unsure, sometimes even a little overwhelmed.

And then something shifts.

As they begin to focus on their stitches, you can almost feel the room settle.

Conversations soften. Breathing slows. Confidence begins to build.

There’s a moment - often quite quiet - where someone realises:

“I can do this.”

That moment matters.

Because it’s not just about crochet.
It’s about focus, resilience, and belief in your own ability to learn something new.

It’s Not About Switching Off Completely

This isn’t about rejecting technology or stepping away from the modern world entirely.

Social media has its place. It connects us, inspires us, and allows us to share.

But it shouldn’t be the only space we live in.

We need balance.

We need moments that bring us back to ourselves - away from the noise, away from comparison, away from constant input.

A Simple Starting Point

Sometimes, that balance doesn’t require a big change.

It can start small.

A few minutes in the evening.
A quiet moment in the day.
A hook, some yarn, and a willingness to begin.

Because sometimes, the most powerful shifts come from the simplest actions.

And sometimes…it really does start with a single stitch 💛

A gentle invitation

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the pace of everything right now, you’re not alone.

And if you’re curious about finding a different kind of calm, I’d love to support you.

That might be through one of my crochet classes - where you can learn alongside others in a relaxed, welcoming space - or through a more personalised approach with my Stitch Credit 1:1 sessions, designed to meet you exactly where you are.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to reconnect with your creativity, there’s space for you here 💛
