Hi my fellow yarn lovers,
If you're anything like me, the mere mention of a yarn show sparks a flurry of creative ideas and sends your heart aflutter.
There's something truly magical about wandering through a yarn show with its colourful array of soft and squishy irresistible fibres, and a hall fit to burst with yarn-filled excitement.
But yarn festivals can also be quite daunting as you begin to wonder what to take, what shoes to wear, or whether you need cash or a card.
With the Waltham Abbey Wool Show just around the corner, let’s dive into the world of yarn festivals and unravel the secrets to help you maximise your visit while taking the worry out of the equation.
1. Bag It
Before you set foot in the yarn wonderland, arm yourself with a few comfortable bags that won’t cause pain or discomfort. Backpacks are great for spreading the load, and tote bags with long handles are ideal for wearing on your shoulder. If you use a mobility vehicle, ensure your bags can be stored safely on it. Heavier items can go in your backpack, while lighter things work well in your tote. Be wary of pull-along trolleys as they can easily become a hazard in busy aisles.

2. Plan Ahead
Take a list of your works-in-progress (WIPs) and your current wish list of things you want to make, along with the yarn requirements. This will help you match the perfect yarn to your next creation and avoid duplicating yarn you already have at home.
3. Budget Wisely
Yarn shows are incredibly tempting - it’s like being in a candy shop! Setting a budget beforehand can help you avoid any post-yarn-show regrets. Consider what you can afford, especially if - like me - you’re still feeling the pinch after Christmas and waiting for payday. Check beforehand whether the event is cash-only or card-friendly and keep track of your spending throughout the day. Your budget doesn’t have to limit the fun - it’s all about making mindful purchases.
4. Accessibility
Check whether the event organisers have provided an inclusive space for all. Look for details on wheelchair-friendly access, sensory-friendly zones, tactile maps, or accommodations for service animals. Knowing this information in advance can ensure a more enjoyable visit.
5. Get Your Bearings
Most yarn shows provide a map of exhibitors on their website. Print this out or save it to your phone and identify the sellers you definitely want to visit. Prioritise these stops to make sure you don’t miss out. Also, note the locations of toilets (queues can be long!) and rest areas.
6. Have a Game Plan
Know which exhibitors you want to see and what (if anything) you’d like to buy. Having a clear idea can help you focus and avoid feeling overwhelmed. It’s easy to get distracted, so a little pre-show research goes a long way.
7. Embrace the Indie Scene
Indulge your senses by exploring the offerings of independent yarn dyers. These artists infuse passion and personality into their hand-dyed yarns, resulting in unique and vibrant colour ways that you won’t find elsewhere.
8. Attend Workshops and Demos
Yarn shows aren’t just about shopping; they’re a learning adventure too! Check out the workshops and demonstrations on offer to enhance your skills and discover new techniques. Book ahead to secure your spot.

10. Comfort First
Wear your comfiest shoes to avoid blisters and dress in layers to adapt to temperature changes. Yarn shows can get warm with all the excitement and crowds.
11. Stay Hydrated and Pack Snacks
Take a water bottle and refill it throughout the day to stay hydrated. Bringing a packed lunch can save you from long food queues and leave more money in your budget for yarn!
12. Enjoy the Atmosphere
Take a moment to soak in the atmosphere - the bustling crowd, the soft hum of conversations, and the touch and feel of the yarn. It’s a sensory experience that goes beyond the visual feast and creates happy memories.
I hope this guide helps you plan and enjoy your amazing yarn-filled day out. Immerse yourself in the vibrant world of squishy fibre, connect with like-minded crafters, and let the yarn show magic inspire your next masterpiece.
Happy knitting and crocheting!
