Our Story
Welcome to Stitch Street
Hi, I’m Jen – the person behind all things Stitch Street.
I live in Cambridgeshire with my husband and two beautiful children. I work part-time as a languages teacher and in my spare(!) time I love to crochet, read and run when I can to relax.
I set up Stitch Street Crochet during the dark days of lockdown #1 of 2020…remember them?!
Yeah, I shudder at the memory too. After juggling the demands of home-schooling, online learning and being an all-round, general children’s entertainer, crochet would save me at the end of a long, long day.
After months of fretting and ‘what ifs’ I thought enough was enough and took a leap of faith to set up my new business. Over the course of the year and various set backs I began selling my products at a local shop, posting and documenting my makes on social media too. When further lockdowns loomed, I took the decision to move my shop online.
Throughout the lockdown and home-schooling, I watched my son tie himself in knots on endless zoom calls because he was frightened of getting things wrong or fearing that we weren’t doing things the same as everyone else. I mean, heaven forbid!
As the world began opening up again and I went back into school, I realised that while we’d all been in the same storm, we’d all been on different boats. Even though our experiences had been different, one thing was true for all of us – children as well as adults – had been deeply affected by the pandemic.
So many people I speak to, confess to feeling a lack of resilience in dealing with the stresses and strains of modern day life – now, more than ever. I saw it in my own children – that inability to deal with set backs and fearing failure.
So, it was for this reason that I took the plunge and started training to become a Knitting For All Accredited Teacher. For me, both knitting and crochet helps to keep me calm, focused and perhaps most importantly, it teaches me that mistakes are a good thing. Without mistakes, we’ll never learn anything!
I know I don’t know all there is to know about crochet and knitting and I make a lot of mistakes, but I am excited to learn more and combine my love of these crafts with my love of teaching.
I am passionate about delivering quality knitting and crochet classes, workshops and 1:1 tuition for kids, teens and adults.
Why?
Because I believe that while it is a fantastic skill to have, it will help our children (and even adults!) to build resilience and their belief in their own ability.
Absolutely anyone can knit and/or crochet, of that I am a firm believer.
So if you’ve never tried these wonderful crafts, why not get in touch? I’d love to hear from you.
